NET (short for National Eligibility Test) is an examination conducted by the University Grants Commission in order to ascertain the eligibility for lectureship and for awarding the Junior Research Fellowship. The examination is intended for Indian nationals and aims to implement uniform standards on aspirants entering the teaching and research field in various disciplines.
The NET exam takes place twice a year - once in June and then in December. NET is conducted for the following subjects:
o Humanities - including Languages
o Social Sciences.
o Environmental Sciences
o Forensic Science
o Computer Science and Applications
o Electronic Science
The CSIR (short for Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) in collaboration with the UGC conducts the UGC-CSIR NET for the following subjects:
o Life Sciences
o Chemical Sciences
o Physical Sciences
o Mathematical Sciences
o Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences
The test for Junior Research Fellowship has been in place since 1984. While in the year 1988, the Indian government granted the UGC the right to conduct the NET exam.
However, in spite of the best efforts by UGC, opinion is quite divided among critics. Some say NET is just a sham which does not actually differentiate the cream of people really deserving to be teachers from the others. On the other hand, there are others who firmly believe in the ideology, processes and outcome of the examination in toto.
Opinions apart, the fact remains that the UGC-NET examination is a reality that has to be borne by all lectureship and research aspirants in India. For the time being - at the least.
